Patti makes handwoven totebags, cellphone cases and housewares with yarn she “spins” from used plastic bags (bread, newspaper, grocery and Ace bags). She calls it “plarn” and the results of her craftiness are pretty darn cool as well as totally ecofriendly–50 grocery bags are upcycled into just one PlarnItAll creation. That’s a lot of leftover bags kept out of landfills.
Most of her working material is donated by neighbors in a manner Mallin describes as “drive-by plarnings,” which involve overnight deliveries of bags of plastic bags left porchside just begging to be made into something colorful, useful and extremely durable (all of her products can be hand or machine washed, including the pillows).
You can see and buy Patti’s wares at Old Takoma Ace Hardware from Wednesday March 21 – Sunday March 25. Meet Patti during our artist reception on Sunday March 2, 12-2pm, also at the store. Old Takoma Ace is located at 7001 Caroll Ave. in Takoma Park, MD.
